What is SRM and where is it?
When people ask about the SRM ranking, they usually mean SRM Institute of Science and Technology, a deemed university since 2002. Its main campus is at Kattankulathur in Chengalpattu district, on the southern edge of Chennai, with other SRMIST campuses at Ramapuram, Vadapalani, Tiruchirappalli and Modinagar in Ghaziabad. NIRF ranks SRMIST as one institution, so the same rank covers all of these campuses.
The specialist categories show where SRMIST is strongest. It is 10th in Pharmacy and 18th in Medical, and SRM Dental College in Chennai is 8th among dental colleges, well ahead of SRM Kattankulathur Dental College at 39. In Management it is 56th, much lower than its engineering rank, so MBA applicants should weigh that separately. In Research Institutions it is 25th.

NIRF 2026 status
As of 15 October 2026, Careers360 still showed the NIRF 2026 release date as "to be notified", and the expected month had moved from September to October 2026.
Some websites already show "NIRF 2026" lists. Until nirfindia.org publishes them, those lists are not official. Check www.nirfindia.org directly.
SRMIST NIRF rank history
A Careers360 compilation (September 2026) gives these engineering and university ranks over the years:
| Year | Engineering | University |
|---|---|---|
| 2025 | 14 | 11 |
| 2024 | 13 | 12 |
| 2023 | 28 | 18 |
| 2022 | 24 | 19 |
| 2021 | 34 | 30 |
| 2020 | 41 | 35 |
| 2019 | 36 | 32 |
| 2018 | 46 | 41 |
| 2017 | 35 | 34 |

The trend is clear: both ranks improved a lot after 2018. NIRF 2024 overall rank was reported as 21, so 2025 (22) was about level.
NAAC grade and QS ranking
- NAAC: SRMIST holds A++, awarded in 2024 in its 4th accreditation cycle. A++ is the top grade on NAAC's scale. SRMIST's page does not state the CGPA.
- QS World University Rankings: 1001 to 1200 in both the 2026 and 2027 editions.
- QS Asia: the QS page shows joint 226 without naming the year. Wikipedia reports 221 for QS Asia 2025, which is probably a different edition.
Rankings of other SRM institutions
The ranks above belong to SRMIST only. Other SRM-named institutions are ranked, or not ranked, on their own.

| SRM Valliammai Engineering College | Not in Engineering 1 to 300 | NAAC A; NBA for CSE, ECE, EEE, EIE, Mechanical |
A sponsored banner has claimed "#11 in University Category by NIRF" for SRMIST Tiruchirappalli. That rank belongs to SRMIST as a whole, not to the Trichy campus alone.
Is SRM a tier 1 college?
There is no official "tier 1" or "tier 2" list for Indian colleges. Tiers are informal labels used by students, coaching sites and some recruiters, and different people draw the line in different places. NIRF is the government ranking, so it is the fairest single number to use.
On NIRF 2025, SRMIST is 11th among universities and 14th in engineering nationally. Whether that counts as "tier 1" for you depends on the comparison you are making and the branch you want.
Is SRM a good college? What to check
Rankings are one input. Before you decide, compare these for the exact campus and branch you are offered:
- Check the campus. SRMIST ranks do not transfer to SRM AP, Sonepat, Sikkim or group colleges.
- Read the official NIRF data PDF, which includes placement and median salary figures. See SRM placements.
- Compare total cost: tuition plus hostel and mess. See fees and hostel fees.
- Talk to current students in your branch about classes, attendance rules and campus life.
For an overview of the university, see SRMIST overview.
