Deemed university year: some sources say 2003. SRMIST's own About page and its Vadapalani heritage page both say 2002, which is the year used here.
Why "SRM University" and "SRMIST" both appear
It is reported that the Chennai institution used the name SRM University from 2006. In 2017, a UGC directive told deemed universities not to use "University" in their names, and it went back to "SRM Institute of Science and Technology". That is why old documents, alumni and search results still say SRM University Chennai.
Today "SRM University" also appears in the names of three separate state private universities: SRM University AP, SRM University Delhi-NCR (Sonepat) and SRM University Sikkim. See the SRMIST overview for how they differ.
