What is SRM Institute of Science and Technology?
SRMIST is a single deemed university with several campuses. It was declared a deemed university in 2002 under Section 3 of the UGC Act 1956, and it gives 1985 as its founding year, when SRM Engineering College opened at Kattankulathur.
The name has changed over time. It is reported that the institution was called SRM University from 2006 and went back to "SRM Institute of Science and Technology" in 2017, after a UGC directive asked deemed universities to drop "University" from their names. That is why many people, and many search results, still say "SRM University Chennai".
Its founder and chancellor is Dr. T. R. Paarivendhar, who founded the SRM Group in 1968. The Vice-Chancellor is reported to be Dr. C. Muthamizhchelvan. For more on the name, see SRM full form.

Some sources give 2003 for deemed status. SRMIST's own About page and its Vadapalani heritage page both say 2002, so this guide uses 2002.
SRMIST campuses
SRMIST's website lists these campus locations. All of them are part of the same deemed university, so students follow SRMIST regulations and use SRMIST systems such as Academia.
| Campus | Where | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Kattankulathur (KTR) | SRM Nagar, Kattankulathur 603 203, Chengalpattu district, south of Chennai | Main campus, original 1985 site |
| Ramapuram | Chennai | Branch campus; SRM Dental College is reported to be here |
| Vadapalani | 100 Feet Road, Vadapalani, Chennai 600026 | City campus, opened 2009; site srmistvdp.edu.in |
| Delhi-NCR | Modinagar, Ghaziabad district, Uttar Pradesh | Not the same as SRM University Sonepat |
| Tiruchirappalli | Trichy, Tamil Nadu | Listed by SRMIST as a campus |
| Baburayanpettai | Acharapakkam, Chengalpattu | Listed in SRMIST's campus menu |
The same About page also says "8 Campuses" in "6 Cities", which does not exactly match the menu. The SRM group also lists Gangtok (Sikkim) among its locations, but SRM University Sikkim is a separate university.
Faculties and courses
SRMIST lists six faculties:
- Engineering and Technology
- Management
- Medicine and Health Sciences
- Science and Humanities
- Law
- Agricultural Sciences
Medicine and Health Sciences includes the medical college hospital at Kattankulathur, SRM Dental College (started 1995 to 1996) and SRM Kattankulathur Dental College (started 2007 to 2008). MBBS admission at Kattankulathur goes through NEET, and the programme page lists 250 seats including 3 NRI seats.
B.Tech and M.Tech admission is through SRMJEEE. As examples of fees, the SRMIST programme pages list B.Tech CSE at Kattankulathur at Rs 4,75,000 per year and B.Tech Mechanical at Rs 2,75,000 per year in tuition. The pages do not print the academic year. See B.Tech fees, MBA, BBA, BCA and other fees and medical and dental colleges.
SRMIST also runs online programmes through its Directorate of Online Education. See SRM online courses.

SRMIST vs other SRM universities and colleges
Several institutions use the SRM name. They have different legal status, websites, fees and student portals.
| Institution | Type | Official site |
|---|---|---|
| SRM Institute of Science and Technology (all campuses above) | Deemed university (2002) | www.srmist.edu.in |
| SRM University AP, Amaravati | State private university, reported to be set up in 2017 | srmap.edu.in |
| SRM University Delhi-NCR, Sonepat | State private university, reported to be set up in 2013 | srmuniversity.ac.in |
| SRM University Sikkim (Shri Ramasamy Memorial University) | State private university under a 2013 Sikkim Act (reported) | srmus.ac.in (reported) |
| Group colleges such as Valliammai, Easwari, SRM Madurai and SRM TRP | Anna University affiliated engineering colleges | Each college has its own site |
One link between them: SRMJEEE scores are accepted at SRMIST campuses and at SRM University AP, Sonepat and Sikkim. After admission, though, each university runs its own systems. For example, SRM AP students do not use SRMIST Academia.
Not the same: SRMU Lucknow and SRMS Bareilly
Some similar names belong to different groups altogether:
- SRMU Lucknow is Shri Ramswaroop Memorial University in Barabanki district, Uttar Pradesh, reported to be set up in 2012 under a UP state Act. It is not part of SRM Chennai.
- SRMS Bareilly institutions are run by the Shri Ram Murti Smarak Trust, which is reported to be unrelated to the Sri Ramasamy Memorial group.
- SR University, Warangal sits near SRM in some NIRF tables but is a different institution.
In NIRF lists, SRMIST appears as "S.R.M. Institute of Science and Technology".
